Social Studies Debate Begins Anew

The debate over Social Studies curriculum beings again at the State Board of Education. There are some sides of the issue that worry that things like religion will be left out. Teacher Lanell Haney is one of them. “I did see the issue of religious censoring (in the classroom)” There are some like Deanna Gomez, part of a protesting student group, that believes there isn’t enough Hispanic representation in the curriculum. “The only exposure I received growing up was a small paragraph in my Social Studies textbook on Cesar Chavez.” The curriculum standards won’t be finalized until May. Ultimately these standards will be used to write textbooks that could end up in more places than just Texas.
