State Board Hears Graduation Concerns

The State Board of Education hears from teachers and parents about new graduation requirements. The requirements are called four by four, meaning students will be required to take four years of math, science, social studies and English in order to graduate high school. Plano ISD teacher Lori Whitaker says that could cause problems for fine arts students getting the classes they need. “I feel it’s going to limit their course selection, I feel it’s going to keep them from getting scholarships because they won’t be able to prepare a portfolio as they have in the past.” State Board Member Patricia Hardy says however we can’t back away from the tougher graduation standards. “I’ll be John Brown if I’m going to back off of a rigorous high school requirement program for anything.” She says she would consider a longer school day or school year but the standards need to stay.
