The State Board of Education moves forward with a recommendation to give student athletes more credit towards graduation. Under new graduation requirements it would be impossible for student athletes to participate in four years of high school sports and still get the credit needed to graduate under the commended program. Board member Rene Nuñez says fine arts students get four years of elective credit and athletes should too. “Band, JROTC, we have other activities that get four years credit for four years participation. I think athletics should fall into that same category.” But Board member Geraldine Miller says this could water down the focus on academics. “You got to work first before you play. You got to pass your courses. You’ve got to look to academics.”
